Stephen Grand z”l was kind. He embraced life. He was a smart businessperson and a natural leader. And he believed deeply in our shared Jewish values, particularly the responsibility we hold to take care of one another. Stephen’s generosity and compassion continue to improve lives today.

Stephen Grand z”l cared deeply about improving the lives of people in great need—a value shared by his wife, Nancy. Stephen’s legacy of compassion continues today through the Nancy and Stephen Grand Endowment Fund.

Stephen Grand z”l cared deeply about improving the lives of people in great need—a value shared by his wife, Nancy. Stephen’s legacy of compassion continues today through the Nancy and Stephen Grand Endowment Fund.

With his wife, Nancy, Stephen set an inspiring example of how to thoughtfully and strategically address community issues. First in their hometown of Detroit and later in the San Francisco Bay Area, the couple generously supported causes that enhanced the quality of life for individuals and families facing hardships and difficulties.

Nancy recalls that they discovered Jewish Family and Children’s Services (JFCS) soon after moving to the area, drawn by the comprehensive safety net the agency offers to the entire community across all stages of life.

For many years, the couple contributed to JFCS’ services for seniors, helping to ensure that vulnerable older adults who could not afford the full cost received loving, expert care.

Even after Stephen was diagnosed with cancer, his heart remained open to the challenges of people going through hard times. He felt so strongly that the most vulnerable among us should be able to live with dignity that he included a gift to JFCS in his will.

This gift established the Nancy and Stephen Grand Endowment Fund. Year after year, the fund helps older adults in great need receive the support, companionship, and world-class care necessary to stay connected and independent.

“A strong community is one where we nurture each other and are nurtured—giving help and being able to rely on trusted help, too,” reflects Nancy, herself a treasured and impactful community leader. “It gave Stephen great joy and meaning to aid others. It’s moving to know his kindness will offer comfort long into the future.”

Stephen’s example is a reminder that a gift in your will or trust is a way to carry forward the ideals that shape your life.
