The Courage to Grow and the Power of Connection: Ady’s Place Resident Overcomes Social Challenges to Find Her Voice

Meet Betty

Before Betty Hinaman began living at Ady’s Place—one of the residences within the Gary Shupin Independent Living Community for neurodivergent young adults—she found it difficult to overcome her introversion and social anxiety. She struggled to relate to her peers and had a distant relationship with her mother. Rather than allowing those challenges to define her, however, Betty voiced a clear desire to grow, advocate for herself, and build meaningful connections with the people in her life. Over the past year, she has quietly but powerfully transformed.

Working closely with program staff and her Relationship Coach, Bindiya, Betty has used her time at Ady’s Place to courageously embrace change. Through consistent support and intentional practice, she has developed stronger communication skills and a newfound confidence. Betty now initiates conversations, asks thoughtful follow-up questions, and remains present and regulated during interactions—skills that once felt out of reach. Betty prepares a meal on the stovetop at Ady's Place.

One of the most touching signs of Betty’s progress is the transformation in her relationship with her mother, Suzanne. Before coming to Ady’s Place, Suzanne shared that her daughter rarely showed interest in conversation and almost never asked how she was doing. Today, their conversations are deeper, warmer, and reciprocal. Betty’s growing emotional awareness and expression hasstrengthened and enriched their bond.

Betty’s journey speaks to the power of self-advocacy, perseverance, and the belief that growth is always possible. Her story reminds us that introversion is not an unassailable barrier to connection and that, with the right tools and encouragement, anyone can find their voice.
