June is Pride Month, and we would like to highlight a recent opinion piece in the Bay Area Reporter by community leader Joyce Newstat and state Senator , both of whom are members of the LGBTQ+ community and close friends of JFCS and the JFCS Holocaust Center. They serve on the Governor’s Council on Holocaust and Genocide Education alongside JFCS Executive Director, Dr. Anita Friedman.
In their article, Newstat and Wiener shed light on the historical significance of the pink triangle, a symbol of Pride and a stark reminder of LGBTQ+ persecution during the Holocaust. This symbolism aligns strongly with JFCS’ mission to foster empathy, understanding, and respect for all individuals, irrespective of their identity.
In a time of proliferating hate crimes, discrimination, and antisemitism, they underscore the critical role of education in fostering understanding and combating hate. This sentiment echoes the efforts of JFCS, particularly through our Holocaust Center, to educate communities about the impact of hate and the power of resilience.
