Finding Her Voice: Betty’s Growth at Ady’s Place

Meet Betty

Betty, a resident of Ady’s Place with the Gary Shupin Independent Living Community describes herself as an introvert. While she finds social settings sometimes challenging, she has always carried a quiet wisdom and when she speaks, her words are thoughtful, eloquent, and full of insight. A year ago, Betty used her voice and decided she wanted to grow in confidence, strengthen her self-advocacy, and build meaningful relationships with her peers. She’s since taken thoughtful, intentional steps towards those goals.

With the support of program staff and her Relationship Coach, Betty has embraced opportunities to practice new communication skills. Through steady encouragement and her own commitment, she has grown more confident initiating conversations, asking thoughtful follow-up questions, and staying engaged in interactions. These moments reflect not only new skills, but the confidence she has been building within herself.

Reflecting on her time at Ady’s Place, Betty shared, “I have made a lot of progress since I came here. I am more comfortable communicating with staff about how I feel, and my confidence talking with others has raised.” She added with pride, “I don’t avoid those situations anymore.”

One meaningful reflection of Betty’s growth can be seen in her relationship with her mother. Over time, their conversations have become more mutual and connected, filled with warmth and genuine curiosity about one another’s lives. As Betty continues to express herself more openly, their bond has deepened in ways that feel authentic and affirming for both of them.

Betty’s journey is a testament to the power of self-advocacy, community support, and the many ways growth can take shape. Her story reminds us that introversion is not a barrier to connection, and that with the right tools and encouragement, anyone can find their voice.
