Simon Miller, volunteer with JFCS’ Nutrition Program:

When I moved to San Francisco from Boston just two years ago—by way of my hometown, London—I knew I wanted to build meaningful connections in my new home. I didn’t expect that delivering groceries through JFCS would become one of the most impactful and fulfilling parts of my week.

I had been thinking about volunteering for some time, but the horrific events on October 7 made the decision more urgent. Like many others in the Jewish community, I felt a renewed sense of identity and a strong desire to give back. I looked for a local organization where I could make a difference, and JFCS stood out immediately for its values and reach within the Jewish and broader community.

From my very first conversation with the volunteer team, I felt welcomed and guided. They suggested I begin with the Food Bank grocery delivery program for JFCS clients in need, and it’s been a perfect fit.

Dropping off groceries may sound like a straightforward door-to-door experience, but what I’ve discovered is that the real impact isn’t just about the food delivery—it’s about showing up for someone. At each stop, I’ve met clients who live alone, face financial hardship, or who are navigating personal challenges. During Hanukkah, one client tried to offer me a dollar to thank me. It was clear she didn’t have much, but she wanted me to know it mattered. It’s in these small moments—conversations on doorsteps, inside jokes, and shared smiles—that I see how much this work means to people.

“That sense of connection—of being part of something larger—is what keeps me coming back.”

Although I’m just a few months in, I already feel a growing sense of community with the people I serve. Some clients greet me like a friend now, asking how I’ve been. That sense of connection—of being part of something larger—is what keeps me coming back.

Growing up Jewish, I have always valued the importance of community and mutual responsibility. Through JFCS, I’ve found a way to live those values close to home—and discovered how much a simple knock on the door can mean to somebody.
