Assistant Controller

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Assistant Controller, reporting to the Controller, supports the management of all financial accounting and reporting activities, including journal entries, general ledger processing, account reconciliations, bank reconciliations, variance analysis, and other related tasks. This position serves as a steward for the agency’s financial resources and helps promote its economic liability by ensuring accounting systems and assets are managed with integrity.

Salary Range: $120,000-$130,000 (depending on experience)

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Planning, organizing and reviewing the financial activities and programs, including preparation of monthly budget-to-actual variance reports and supporting development of the annual budget

Leading monthly, quarterly, and year-end closes. Preparing quarterly GAAP financial statements, operating results narratives and ad hoc reports for the Finance Committee, Executive Director, CFO, Controller, and Program Directors

Overseeing investment accounting, including preparation of the Summary of Investment worksheet, Investment Rollforward schedule, monthly journal entries, monthly investment activity analysis, reconciliation of investment balance sheet accounts and preparation of investment reports for the Investment Committee

Reviewing reconciliations of all bank, credit card, and other balance sheet accounts prepared by the Staff Accountant or Senior Accountant; performing reconciliations of assigned accounts and preparing monthly and quarterly summary analyses

Providing finance support for the Development Department, including production of Named Fund and Donor Advised Fund reports. Serving as backup for processing stock gift transactions and supporting financial services for JFCS’ Endowment Program, including internal endowed funds, split-interest gifts, and donor-advised funds. Providing backup for grants and contract accounting and reporting

Assisting with preparations for audits (workers’ compensation, 403(b), and year-end financial statement), tax return work papers, and year-end footnotes

Recommending, implementing, and maintaining accounting systems and procedures to meet reimbursement and reporting requirements. Participating in system selection and implementation as requested

Administering the general ledger accounting software (Sage Intacct)
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related field is required; CPA certification is preferred
- Solid knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
- Minimum five years of experience in accounting, payroll processing, bookkeeping, and budget management within a finance department
- Nonprofit sector experience required
- A minimum of two years of supervisory experience is preferred
- Proficiency with accounting systems, preferably Sage Intacct, Adaptive Planning, HR systems such as Paylocity or similar, and MS Access
- Intermediate proficiency level in Microsoft Excel, and other MS Office suite software products
- Demonstrated experience with system implementation and process improvement
- Ability to effectively supervise, guide, and evaluate the work of assigned staff
