Donor Circle Legal Fellowship
Under the supervision of the Director of Legal Services, the Donor Circle Fellow will assist in the preparation and filing of immigration forms, perform legal research for complex immigration issues, and help to educate via legal training events. The Fellow will assist in outreach to Bay Area immigrant communities to inform them of current and upcoming changes to immigration laws. The Fellow understands and assists in meeting budget and services goals, understands the mission and objectives of Jewish Family and Children’s Services and works within the limitations of the Agency’s resources and performs all duties in compliance with agency standards.
This position is an opportunity for a law school student (rising 2L or 3L) or recent law school graduate to gain practical immigration law experience and support underserved immigrant communities.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Tracks the progress of individual cases and prepares case documents for filings, interviews, and hearings.
- Contacts USCIS Services Centers and District offices to follow up on the status of cases and assists clients with Congressional inquiries.
- Assists Director of Legal Services with the preparation of USCIS forms, responses to Requests for Evidence, and other filings.
- Prepares letters, legal memoranda and other material for JFCS Legal Services department.
- Responds to client inquiries and proactively informs clients regarding the current status of their cases – including, for example, the need for any additional documents or information under Director of Legal Services direction.
- Assists Director of Legal Services in creating virtual legal training for local law firms, bar associations, and/or community-based organizations.
- Represents JFCS Legal Services at virtual citizenship and immigration events, attending all virtual workshops and assisting with setup and facilitation of the events.
- Interprets at various immigration interview appointments, USCIS interviews, and other client meetings when needed.
- Assists in creating print and digital resources for the immigrant community for outreach and educational purposes.
- Performs other tasks as deemed necessary by Director of Legal Services to support the goals of the department.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to issues regarding immigration and naturalization and cross-cultural communications required.
- Ability to organize and prioritize varied tasks to handle multiple responsibilities.
- Fluency in Russian or Spanish is preferred.
Required Education and Experience
- Demonstrated experience in legal research and writing.
- Demonstrated interest in immigration law and serving immigrant communities.
- Minimum of 1 year of law school.
This is a part-time, non-exempt position. Competitive compensation will depend on experience and proficiency level.
