Director of Education – JFCS Holocaust Center
The Director of Education is responsible for the conceptualization, design, implementation, and evaluation of JFCS Holocaust Center programs for more than 25,000 students, teachers and community members under the supervision of the Director of the JFCS Holocaust Center.
The Director of Education works cooperatively in a community-oriented environment and has strong background in Jewish history, tradition, and the Jewish community. They have an in-depth knowledge of Holocaust education and commemoration. They will work to increase the involvement of students, educators, volunteers and donors. They work on a local, state and national level to increase the capacity of California teachers to offer high-quality education to their communities. Specific areas of focus are Holocaust History, antisemitism and Jewish studies. They supervise the creation and implementation of professional development for educators in all school settings, including online learning opportunities. The Director of Education understands and assists in meeting budget and services goals and understands the mission and objectives of Jewish Family and Children’s Services. They work within the limitations of the Agency’s resources and perform all duties in compliance with agency standards. The Director of Education oversees operations of the Holocaust Center in the temporary absence of the Director.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
Professional Development and Community Building
The Director of Education will work with partners on a local, state and national level to improve and elevate the lessons of the Holocaust, antisemitism and Jewish History in public, independent and parochial schools. They will build on existing relationship with educators, school administrators and civic leaders to implement systemic change.
This position will develop programming to inspire interdepartmental teaching of the Holocaust and Jewish studies, and engage the entire school district, community of students, teachers, administrators and parents.
- Identify educators and school administrators that are currently or have the potential to be leaders in Holocaust education and Jewish studies.
- Manage recruitment, application and selection process of Holocaust Center leadership schools and Master Teachers.
- Create and maintain a robust evaluation process for the JFCS Holocaust Center’s educational programs. To measure the experience and impact with students, educators, parents and school administrators.
- Maintain a relationship and mentorship of senior educators in an advanced fellowship program for study locally and abroad.
- Provide curriculum consultation, resources, and mentorship to Bay Area educators and school administrators.
- Develop curriculum in partnership with the California Board of Education, local advocacy groups and educators to inspire successful teaching of the Holocaust and Jewish studies.
- Incorporate primary source material into school’s curriculum including first-person testimony from the William J Lowenberg Speakers Bureau and items from the Tauber Holocaust Archives.
- Foster collaborative partnerships between Bay Area educators and national and international Holocaust institution.
- Broaden the scope of the Holocaust Center by reaching less experienced educators and under-engaged institutions.
Youth, Adult, and Public Education
The Director of Education will lead the initiative to develop programs to educate a broad base of community constituents and increase awareness of the work of the Holocaust Center and JFCS.
In partnership with Holocaust Center staff, provides programmatic advice to communal organizations in developing Holocaust-related events.
- Develops and strengthens relationships between the Holocaust Center and partner organizations.
- Makes public presentations, gives public lectures, and serves as a resource for the larger community.
- Facilitates workshops for educators, students and community members.
- Works in partnership with Holocaust Center staff and other Agency departments on the marketing, implementation and evaluation of events.
- Participates in the planning and implementation of the Day of Learning annual conference, Yom HaShoah Annual Commemoration and other community and educational programs.
- Leads the planning and facilitation of future Legacy Study Tours to Germany, Poland, and Israel for students, teachers or community members. Staffs the Legacy Study Tours (7-24 day trips).
- Oversees Holocaust Center operations in the temporary absence of the Director.
- Support and work cooperatively with other JFCS programs, as needed and appropriate.
- Attend required agency meetings and collaborates with agency staff on related projects as required.
- Track participation rates, participant satisfaction, and program outcomes to evaluate all assigned activities.
- In partnership with JFCS staff, prepare funding proposals and final reports to organizations and foundations.
- Represents the Holocaust Center in the community with potential participants, funders, and collaborating organizations in order to increase support.
- Works to meet budget and service goals.
- Fosters a spirit of teamwork and unity among agency staff that allows for cultivating ideas, expeditious resolution of conflict, and the appreciation of diversity, cohesiveness, supportiveness, and working together to enable each employee, the Holocaust Center, and JFCS to succeed.
- Supports and works cooperatively with other JFCS programs, as needed and appropriate.
- Meets Agency standards for performance by delivering all work to a high standard.
- Attends required agency meetings and collaborates with agency staff on related projects as required. Maintains good working relationships with all staff to help the whole JFCS organization operate as a positive, coordinated unit.
- Complies with the JFCS Policy and Procedures Manual, Workforce Computer Use and Security Policy, and IT Professional Policy Manual, as well as agency policy and procedures for health and safety standards of all JFCS facilities.
- Undertakes other duties and special assignments within the department as may be assigned by the Director.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of Jewish history, culture and community. Has experience implementing and assessing meaningful Jewish programming for teens and adults.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, and attention to detail.
- Excellent writing, verbal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively with a variety of people, and to maintain confidentiality essential.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in marketing, communications, and outreach.
- Fluency in online digital media literacy skills and comfort with integrating the use of Internet and other social media technologies required.
- Intermediate to advanced knowledge of the Microsoft Office productivity suite required, including familiarity with the functions and features of Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook.
- Available to work occasional nights and weekends for JFCS-related events.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
- Ability to work well under pressure, and to respond flexibly and resourcefully to the workload fluctuations inherent in the position.
- Familiarity with databases and information management.
- Familiarity with the functions and features of Zoom and/or other streaming platforms.
Required Education and Experience
- BA degree in Holocaust Studies, Genocide Studies, Jewish Studies, Education, or related subject plus four years working in related fields required. Advanced degree preferred.
- A minimum of three years’ experience in providing Holocaust education especially to youth and supervising volunteers and interns; teaching in informal and formal settings. Classroom teaching experience encouraged.
