Applications for Summer 2024 Are Now Closed. Applications for Summer 2025 Will Open in January, Mark Your Calendar!

Program Description

JFCS offers six-week paid summer internships to qualified students entering grade 10, 11, and 12 in the fall. Our internship program is a great opportunity to learn valuable on-the-job skills and gain real paid work experience.

Interns are placed at one worksite for the summer, where they are assigned an on-site supervisor. Placements are within one of JFCS’ offices (San Francisco, San Mateo, Palo Alto, and San Rafael) or with businesses and organizations in the community. Interns must be available to work 20 hours per week, and are paid $18 per hour working at their placement. Interns are not required to work on weekends or federal holidays (June 19 and July 4).

A core and unique element of the internship program is weekly Tuesday workshops that provide professional and personal development, tying in skills interns can put into practice at their placements. During these mandatory workshops, interns are encouraged to think about themselves, their futures, and their place in the world through a Jewish values-based lens.

After participating in the program, interns come away with greater clarity about their academic and vocational opportunities and feel better prepared to take the next steps they need to achieve their academic and career goals. They also benefit from a sense of personal achievement, greater responsibility, and increased confidence.

Workshop topics have included:

• Respect for diversity
• Exploration of personal values
• Office etiquette and responsible work behavior
• Researching job opportunities
• Resume and cover letter writing
• Informational and job interviewing skills

How Are Interns Placed?

YouthFirst staff match interns to work sites and positions according to expressed areas of professional interest and skills, as space and opportunity allow. (YouthFirst cannot guarantee placement in a specific field or organization.)
