Residential Counselor, Gary Shupin Independent Living Community – Part-Time

Under the supervision of the Residential Manager, the Resident Mentor empowers residents to work towards greater independence through relationship building and personalized support. The Resident Mentor provides daily instruction and support around all areas of daily living. The Resident Mentor understands and assists in meeting the mission and service goals of Jewish Family and Children’s Services and works within the limitations of the Agency’s resources and performs all duties in compliance with agency standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Works with the Residential Manager and residents to develop and carry out an Individual Program Plan (IPP) to assist residents in reaching their highest level of independent living.
    1. Provides support to develop and follow a consistent schedule of independent living skills instruction and daily routines with resident input.
    2. Promotes and teaches meal planning and preparation, shopping, hygiene, safety awareness, self-advocacy, personal, domestic, medical, financial, social/recreational, communication, and behavior management skills to maintain independence.
    3. Monitors medication and accompany residents to medical appointments.
    4. Assists with transportation or training to obtain transportation.
    5. Supports community integration and development of social skills through encouraging and facilitating recreational activities.
    6. Completes daily written documentation of activities as assigned, including plans, progress notes and reports.
  2. Prepares meals for residents.
  3. Exercises mature judgment and relates to individuals in a warm and caring manner.
  4. Attends regularly scheduled staff meetings.
  5. Safeguards client privacy and confidentiality, making sure protected health information is secured.
  6. Maintains good working relationships with all staff to help the whole JFCS Agency operate as a positive, coordinated unit.
  7. Meets agency standards for performance by delivering all work to a high-quality standard.
  8. Complies with agency policy and procedures for health and safety standards of its’ clients, employees and of the facility.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must have experience using MS Office applications and general computer skills.
  • Knowledge of Jewish community, holidays and cultural activities is not required but is helpful when coordinating or participating in activities with the Jewish Community.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in human services related field preferred.
  • At least one (1) year of experience working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities required.

Compensation and Benefits

This is an hourly, non-exempt, part-time position without benefits.
