The Joy of Gaining Citizenship
I have made life-long friends through my one-on-one and group sessions. One of the proudest moments which I thoroughly enjoyed was attending the citizenship swearing-in of the couple I have known for five years now.--Volunteer

Jewish Family and Children’s Services has helped resettle thousands of emigres from the former Soviet Union and other countries in the San Francisco Bay Area. We welcome you to be a part of the resettlement effort. As a JFCS volunteer, you provide an essential personal link to the community for an emigre individual or family. Through English conversational practice or other assistance, you will help emigres feel more capable in their new surroundings and help build a stronger community.
Help prepare emigres one-on-one or in a group for the citizenship interview using materials and training provided by JFCS.
Provide a personal welcome to an emigre adult, couple, or family by meeting with them once a week for 1 to 1 1/2 hours in their home. Volunteers provide informal conversational practice, support, and an introduction to American life and our local community – no Russian language skill needed.
Meet with emigre adults or seniors once a week for 1 1/2 hours at a JFCS office or other community site to provide conversational English practice.
Volunteers provide companionship and conversation to emigre seniors in their apartments.
Help translate written materials or interpret at appointments for emigres who need assistance.
