Residences for Seniors in Marin County   (partial listing)¹

The following list of residences and care facilities for seniors is a guide to the wide variety of choices available, according to individual need, preference and resources. Because there are so many variables to consider in planning for a move at this time of life it is generally recommended that seniors and/or their families meet with a social worker or nurse, specializing in geriatric services and an elder care attorney, if financial resources need protecting, prior to making the move.

Often a move must be made following a health crisis and hospital discharge planners can also be of assistance. However, being educated to the levels of care, services and costs prior to an emergency can help in being prepared to make an educated choice.

Interim or long term care can also be provided by Seniors·At·Home, Homecare Division, in seniors' own homes or apartments, including some of the independent living plans listed below.

These are residences that are purchased by seniors, just as a private home would be. There is generally an application or processing fee, purchase price and monthly fees. They offer independent units, homes or condominiums and assisted living and skilled nursing as available on a continuum of care. This is the most expensive residence plan for seniors. Some may have an upper age and/or health requirement at admission.

On site personal care, meals, housekeeping, transportation and medication management is provided. The cost is often calculated on a point system according to service provided. These residences offer private or shared rooms in facilities ranging from large institutions to small privately operated homes. Personal, non-medical care, such as bathing, dressing, medication management, transportation, meals and housekeeping are usually provided as needed. Larger facilities offer planned activities and recreational programs. Costs vary by room, location, need and facility. Some use wander guards and alarm systems for residents who are unsafe to leave the premises without escort. Canes, walkers and wheelchairs, occasionally oxygen, may be allowed depending on the facility and the license. The following is a partial list.

Medi-Cal does not cover residential care in California. It is also very difficult to locate an RCFE in the county that will accept SSI rates and that has an opening. (Blanca's, McGarr and St. Michael's accept limited SSI, pending availability.)

Nursing homes are for individuals requiring skilled nursing care, or totally dependent for all personal medical or non-medical care.

Medicare, if the facility is Medicare certified, and private insurance, including long term care insurance, may pay for a period of time depending on care needs.

Medi-Cal will cover individuals who qualify financially and medically for this level of care. It is extremely difficult to locate an available Medi-Cal bed in the county. Most facilities however, if they are Medi-Cal certified, will continue residents who convert to Medi-Cal after private funds are exhausted.
