Symptoms of Specific Eating Disorders

Anorexia
  1. Refusal to maintain recommended weight.
  2. Distorted body image.
  3. Finding excuses to skip meals.
  4. General denial of existence of a food problem.
  5. Unusual eating behaviors or ritualistic eating patterns.
  6. Unusual concern about school or work performance; earned grades and praise are never "good enough.
  7. Oversensitivity to criticism.
  8. Unusual concern over change in routine; not flexible or adaptable.
  9. Closed communication; usually very proper, polite, and may appear tense.
  10. Withdrawal from friends and activities; unusual commitment or immersion in an activity (i.e. dance, working out).
  11. Absence of menstrual cycle (Amenorrhea).
  12. Conversations focused largely around food and weight.
  13. Intolerance of others.
  14. Dieting when not overweight.
  15. Denial of hunger.
  16. Frequent weighing.

Bulimia
  1. Excessive concern about weight.
  2. Binge eating followed by purging.
  3. Frequent overeating, especially when distressed.
  4. Bingeing on high calorie, sweet foods.
  5. Expressing guilt or shame about eating.
  6. Being secretive about binges and vomiting.
  7. Planning binges or opportunities to binge.
  8. Feeling out of control.
  9. Disappearing after a meal.
  10. Depressive moods.
  11. Alcohol and drug abuse common.
  12. Normal or near normal weight (may be overweight).
  13. Common irregularities in menstrual cycle.
  14. Purging may include: vomiting, laxatives, diuretics, excessive exercise, and fasting.

Bulimarexia
Combination of the previous symptoms.


Compulsive Eating
  1. Unable to control food intake.
  2. Repeated, unsuccessful attempts to lose weight by dieting.
  3. Feeling loss of control when eating.
  4. Eating when not physically hungry.
  5. Eating or picking at food without awareness.
  6. Feeling embarrassed or self-conscious about eating.
  7. Denial that weight gain is the result of overeating.
  8. Looking forward with pleasure and anticipation to the moments when you can eat alone.
  9. Eating sensibly in front of others and then overeating when you?re alone.
  10. Having your weight determine your self-esteem.
