Jeremy's Story

Jeremy is an active three-year-old who was expelled from his previous preschool for being destructive with toys and aggressive towards children who got in his way. His new teacher was overwhelmed by this "little tornado" in her room and also concerned about his home situation since she had observed his mother dealing with him in a harsh and angry way. A Parents Place Early Childhood Mental Health Project consultant helped Jeremy's teacher devise some clear limits to establish with him and set up some positive sticker charts for safe behavior. Most importantly, the teacher gave Jeremy lots of positive attention when he was acting appropriately. The ECMH consultant and Jeremy's preschool teacher also discussed how to approach his mother in a supportive way. Jeremy responded beautifully to the positive attention and his mother was very open to suggestions about ways to deal more effectively with her son. She also expressed relief that the teacher was positive about working with Jeremy and didn't want to expel him like his previous school. Jeremy has made steady progress throughout the year.
