for Pre-Kindergarten - 5th Grade Children
Growing up is a challenge. School-age children learn about themselves through the friendships
they establish: at school, on a sports team, in their scouting troops, and with their siblings.
Difficulties in establishing these friendships can have a negative effect on all aspects of a
child's life, from school work to self-esteem.
Play Activity Groups provide an opportunity for children to have a positive experience
with other children over a period of time. Child counselors help the children find successful
ways for getting along with each other.
Play Activity Groups emphasize working as a group. Children are encouraged to play together
and create a safe, fun environment where each child is able to express how he or she feels.
The counselors' role in these groups is to structure an environment where the children feel
comfortable expressing themselves. Once the group is established, the counselors are able to
point out the conflicts that arise in the group and facilitate a resolution with which all
the children can agree.
Change, like all growth, is a slow process. Parents and teachers are critically important
in supporting children's growth and change. The Play Activity Group model includes collaboration
with these allies in the children's growing process and includes individual parent meetings
and parent group workshops.
