| Welcome to Benny's Book Nook! |
|
Hi, I'm Benny the Bookworm. You may not know it, but I'm the premiere book reviewer
in the Bay Area. Sort of the Roger Ebert of the SF book scene - only shorter.
Although I've spent most of my life in the library, I've always wanted to go high
tech. So I'm thrilled that Parents Place is giving me an e-way to share my literary
expertise with you.
I like to diversify my reading - picture books, easy readers, books for parents to
read to their kids, books for kids to read on their own. And every book I recommend
has earned a big "tails-up" from yours truly-the bookworm's sign of approval.
Since I never stop reading, I'll be adding more Benny-recommended books to my page
every month. So bookmark my nook and come back often!

 | Hot Issues, Cool Choices by Sandra McLeod Humphrey
Recommended ages: 10 and up | Bullying has become a serious problem for kids in elementary school and beyond. “Facing bullies, peer pressure, popularity, and put-downs,” is the focus of Sandra McLeod Humphrey’s latest educational book. A retired clinical psychologist, she is the author of numerous books focused on moral education for children.
Hot Issues, Cool Choices includes topics on exclusion, name-calling, bystander dilemmas, the inner world of bullies and today’s newest form of bullying: cyber bullying.
The book—which earned top praise from various educational experts—begins with a dedication to the memory of a boy named Tommy who “took his own life at the age of twelve years, two months, and ten days.”
“I thought the book was really realistic … and all the stories were interesting to read. I feel bad for kids who are bullied,” said ten-year-old fourth grader Joshua Offenberg, who recently read McLeod’s book after learning about bullying at a school assembly. “Every kid should read this book.”
