Purpose of the Fund

The purpose of the S. Portia Steele Memorial Scholarship for Creative Writing, English or Journalism is to provide an annual scholarship for qualified Jewish women pursuing an academic degree in creative writing, or alternatively English or journalism.

Biography
During her writing career in Burlingame, California, Portia was the founder and instructor of Women on Writing©, a seminar for published writers sponsored by the Daly City Senior Center. Between the years of 1992 and 2002, as its facilitator, she helped scores of women pursue their writing and publishing careers. She went on to publish Prosetry©, a monthly newsletter enjoyed by subscribers from 11 countries around the world. Many promising poets and story-tellers had their works published for the first time in this newsletter. It is in the spirit of Portia's love for writing that these awards were conceived. They celebrate her life as a writer and scholar. This Named Continuity Fund makes it possible for Jewish women to receive scholarship assistance in pursuit of an academic degree in Creative Writing, English or Journalism.
