Through the furniture and household items donation
program, JFCS, in collaboration with other local social-service agencies, is able to provide newly
arrived families with some of the basics for their new apartments. For the donors, it's a way to
give a little back. Maybe someone helped you when you first went out on your own, and you want to return
the favor. Or maybe you're redecorating and want someone else to experience the same joy you had when
you bought your first set of furniture. Whether it be, dressers, chairs, sofas, dishes or blankets,
your generous donation can make a refugee's new life a little less difficult. When newcomers arrive
they usually have a few suitcases of clothes and family photos, and not much else. Sometimes their
local families have provided beds for them to sleep on; sometimes they come to an empty apartment.
Imagine their relief and gratitude when they learn that someone will be bringing them a table and
chairs, or beds or armchairs. A little comfort at home can make a big difference for a person
adjusting to a new culture and a new language.
To donate items, simply bring them to on of the following offices Monday - Friday between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm:
- Headquarters Office in San Francisco at 2150 Post St. --- if you have large items or a large volume of smaller items, we may ask you to bring them here as we sort, store and distribute donated items from this location.
- Palo Alto Office at 200 Channing Ave.
- Marin County office at 600 5th Ave. in San Rafael (can take some small items and clothing).
Unfortunately, JFCS does not have trucks or drivers to pick up donated items.
JFCS Clients have access to donated items at our Headquarters and our specific needs vary from week-to-week, however we are always on the look-out for small household goods, winter clothing, and apartment-sized furniture. If you are unable to drop-off your donated items, we can assist you in contacting relatively inexpensive movers who can bring your items to us, or we can direct you to other social-service agencies in the area who will occasionally pick up donations.
Since we usually receive more items than our client's specific needs, we are working with organizations such as The Arc of San Francisco and the St. Anthony's Foundation to allow their clients in need to obtain some of these valuable donated items.
