A recovering alcoholic/addict who suffers from a severe personality disorder, Jeremy is also
the single parent of a ten-year-old daughter Jenny. When Jeremy first came to JFCS, he
and Jenny were homeless. So one of the first steps for Jeremy's JFCS counselor was to help
Jeremy find an apartment he could afford in a child-safe neighborhood. The counselor also
worked with Jeremy to get Jenny enrolled in a local school, arranged for her to get a
full scholarship to a Jewish overnight summer camp, and even went shopping with Jeremy
and Jenny to purchase the things she'd need for camp.
Since Jeremy has a pattern of sabotaging his recovery, his JFCS counselor meets with him
weekly for individual counseling and monitors his attendance at work, 12-step meetings
and parenting education classes. He also keeps an eye on Jenny – going with Jeremy to
parent-teacher conferences and stopping by the apartment regularly to ensure everything
is under control and her needs are being met.
Although Jeremy has remained clean and sober for over a year now, his JFCS counselor
knows there's a lot of work still to be done. "With cases like Jeremy's which have
multiple complicating factors, there's a lot that needs to happen for him to be able
to maintain his recovery long-term. It's not a 'quick-fix' scenario. But having a more
stable life is having a big impact on both Jenny and Jeremy. And that makes it all
worthwhile."
